Selection Criteria SC1 Demonstrated experience and skills to meet the first aid needs of children, staff and visitors in the College.
SC2 A current qualification in nursing and/or extensive experience working in a busy first aid environment as well as comprehensive knowledge of Anaphylaxis, Asthma and Diabetes.
SC3 Evidence of exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to manage work priorities, meet deadlines and develop procedures and guidelines in a first aid setting.
SC4 Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a professional and collaborative manner.
SC5 Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills that will assist in forming strong relationships with students, staff and other members of the school community (including parents).
SC6 Demonstrated ability to use office IT systems such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
Knowledge of Compass and/or CASES21 is an advantage but not essential.
Role This position is 2 days a week.
As this is a job share position, flexibility with regards to availability of days on would be advantageous.
The First Aid Coordinator at Dohertys Creek P-9 College fulfils an important role in ensuring the safety and welfare of students and staff at the College through provision of first aid.
It is expected that they will provide a high level of customer service and be competent in the provision of up to date and relevant information.
The First Aid Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining and inputting accurate first aid data which may need to be reported to Teachers, Leadership, Welfare Officers and other stakeholders as necessary.
The provision of accurate information is important as it projects a professional image which is the aim of Dohertys Creek P-9 College at all times.
Confidentiality is a vital component of this position.
Range 3 is distinguished by the introduction of management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services.
The role will usually impact beyond the work area or professional field.
It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives, such as in school administration, operations or educational programs.
Direction on targets and goals is provided but the position will have some degree of latitude in determining how they are achieved.
This latitude will generally be limited by standard procedures and school policy.
Deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.
The provision of business management responsibilities becomes a feature at range 3.
Management of staff to achieve the expected outcomes is a key responsibility.
Staff management issues will be resolved with minimal reference to senior management, although guidance will be required in more complex cases.
Senior management will be provided with timely reports and advice, although this will generally be confined to matters relating to the immediate work area, service provision or educational program and is unlikely to impact substantially on whole of school operations.
This is the minimum range for positions that carry a mandatory qualification requirement of not less than four years.
Professional student support positions become a feature at range 3 (e.g.
therapists, psychologists) where standard professional services are delivered.
Professional support and guidance will be close at hand and deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.
Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
Responsibilities TYPICAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE: Assess and administer first aid to students and staff.
Order, store, monitor and administer medication and medical supplies in accordance with the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances legislation.
Contact parents, emergency services, allied and community health as required.
Liaise with teaching staff regarding any problems/queries about student's medical conditions.
Refer to and liaise with other appropriate colleagues (e.g.
Principal Team, Leading Teachers, Wellbeing team) and health professionals as appropriate.
Maintain Accident/illness Register and enter data according to DET requirements.
Prepare and maintain yard duty bags, first aid boxes for classrooms as well as excursion/camp first aid kits.
Prepare and monitor first aid budget.
Maintain first aid supplies and stationery for first aid room.
Perform head lice checks as required.
Develop procedures and documentation in relation to First Aid duties.
Assist with the liaison and communication between parents, staff and members of the wider community.
Receive and provide information to client enquiries and provide direction and advice in line with school policy and procedures.
Maintain, enter and retrieve data from the school's computer system in relation to first aid.
Prepare correspondence according to school procedures that is relevant to the First Aid duties (e.g.
Head lice notices and Proformas).
Distribute as necessary copies of medical information to class teachers, sickbay emergency folder etc.
Print, update & share lists of students and their medical conditions to colleagues as required.
Liaise with the Student Enrolment Officer to ensure newly enrolled students' medical information is communicated to appropriate staff.
Coordinate the distribution of medical care forms/action plans as required, following up with parents to ensure they are completed.
Communicate with parents/guardians to ensure that student's medical information is correct and up to date.
Maintain and update First Aid policies and procedures.
Comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations in work practices and in the maintenance of the environment and equipment.
Provide education to staff in relation to common health conditions (e.g.
Anaphylaxis/allergy/asthma).
This includes presenting the twice-yearly briefings on anaphylaxis, asthma and diabetes.
Produce regular articles on pertinent health issues through the College newsletter and website.
Participate where appropriate in meetings relating to health and safety issues.
Always maintain confidentiality.
Ensure first aid records are maintained and archived in accordance with DET retention of records guidelines and procedures.
Any ad hoc duties as required.
Who May Apply Applicants with a current qualification in nursing and/or extensive experience working in a busy first aid setting as well as strong administrative skills are encouraged to apply.
Applicants will also be required to hold a current Level 2 first aid certificate as well as training in anaphylaxis, asthma and diabetes that meets DET requirements.
